Privacy Policy for What's Playin

Effective Date: April 15, 2026

What's Playin spans two products: the What's Playin mobile app for users discovering music at venues, and What's Playin DJ (DJ Console), the macOS app for DJs broadcasting their sets. This Privacy Policy explains what data each product collects, how we use it, and your choices.

We do not sell or share your data with advertisers or third parties.

What's Playin (Mobile App)

Information We Collect

  • Microphone access (optional): The microphone is active only when you grant permission and tap a mic action button. Audio is used to identify currently playing music (similar to Shazam). Audio is processed securely for recognition and not stored beyond what's needed.
  • Location data (optional): If you grant permission, location is used to power location-based features like nearby venues and reactions. You can use the app without location, with reduced functionality.
  • Device information: Anonymous device type, OS version, and app version may be collected to help us improve performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • User feedback: Any information you choose to share when contacting us by email.

How We Use Information

  • Crowdsourced music identification: Recognized tracks contribute to a real-time view of what's playing at venues, available to all app users.
  • To improve and troubleshoot the app.
  • To respond to support requests and feedback.

Your Choices

  • You can revoke microphone or location access anytime via your device settings.
  • You can use core features without granting either permission, with reduced functionality.

We do not collect personal identifiers (like your name, email, or contacts) unless you provide them voluntarily.

What's Playin DJ (DJ Console)

Information We Collect

  • DJ profile data: The DJ name, photo, bio, and social handles you provide during profile creation. Profile data is publicly visible to identify you on the platform.
  • Account identity: Apple or Google sign-in is used solely to identify your account. We do not contact you for marketing.
  • File permission (DJ software history): Strictly limited to your DJ software's feed/history file (VirtualDJ tracklist, Rekordbox database, or Serato history). We read only song metadata: artist, title, and timestamp.
  • Track activity: The artist, title, and timestamp of tracks you play during your assigned set. No audio is captured or transmitted.

How We Use Information

  • To feed your live track history to the venue's audience on the mobile app while you broadcast.
  • To maintain your DJ profile and set history.

Data Retention

  • Set history is retained for 30 days by default.
  • We may extend retention if your set data is sparse, to ensure venues and your followers have meaningful track history.

Your Control

  • Delete your account: You can permanently delete your account and all associated data from the menu bar app under Account Actions.
  • Request your set history: Email [email protected] to request a copy of your set history.
  • Stop sharing anytime: Click Stop Sharing in the menu bar app to halt track transmission.

Data Storage & Security

  • Mobile app audio samples are processed only for recognition and not permanently stored.
  • Location data remains on your device unless you choose to share it.
  • DJ track metadata is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS) and stored on secure servers.
  • We take reasonable measures to protect data transmitted to our servers.
